How much does it cost to have your window frames painted?

You should, first of all, take into account the fact that the price for the painting of window frames depends primarily on the hourly rate charged by the painter. Other factors matter, but this is the most important cost.

Hourly rate for painting work, incl. paint, materials and VAT Average price for window frame painting (for 7m² of outer window frames for 1 house)
Between 26 and 39 GBP/hour. Between 390 & 1520 GBP.

Which factors affect the cost of painting window frames?

Factor 1: The painter

As stated earlier, the primary factor in terms of cost is the hourly rate of the painter involved. This will usually fall between 26 and 39 GBP/hour. When the window frames on the outside of the house have to be painted, it is important to check if the rental cost of the scaffolding is included, otherwise this will be charged extra!

Factor 2: The paint

In the case of wooden window frames, it’s important to realise quality paint is important, in order to protect the wood against moisture. This will allow them to last much longer. When using aluminium and plastic frames, paint is not needed. If you do decide to paint these, always use a primer, which will allow the paint to adhere properly to the material.

Type of paint Price per litre, incl. VAT m² per litre Details
Primer 22-39 GBP 7-13 Base layer
Stain and varnish 22-52 GBP 9-15 Protective layer
Covering paint 22-48 GBP 4-15 Paint for use inside and outside

Factor 3: Combining paint jobs

If you would like to get multiple parts of your house painted, it may be financially interesting to combine the different paint jobs.

Surface Average price, incl. wage for labour, paint, materials and VAT Depends on
Stairs 300-650 GBP Whether these need to be whitewashed once, or whether they must be sanded, cleaned and painted too.
Dormer 390-830 GBP Whether only the side panels must be painted or the sidebar or full dormer, window frames and windows included.
Ceiling 220-1300 GBP From 30-45 m², incl. the entire kitchen (kitchen cabinets).
Doors 260-1700 GBP 2-40 doors, possibly including door frames

If there is a lot of outdoor painting to be done, you can count on the following prices:

Type of home Average cost of outdoor painting based on wage for labour, paint, materials and VAT
Apartment 830 -910 GBP
Terraced house 1200 – 1400 GBP
Semi-detached house 2500 – 2700 GBP
Detached house 5200 GBP and more

Interesting tips to save money:

  • Carry out the preparatory work yourself. You can make the painter’s work a lot easier (and thus cheaper) by choosing to clean and sand your own window frames. You can also fix potential imperfections and tape off the edges. The painter will then require less time for this job, which will benefit your final bill!
  • Winter painter. Between November and March, you can choose to use a so-called winter painter. Painting your window frames can easily happen in winter, too, unless it’s raining or snowing (in case the outer frames need to be painted). This can mean a savings of up to 30 percent!
  • Subscribing to a maintenance service. For wooden window frames, it’s important the paintwork is always in an optimal condition. By subscribing to a maintenance service for a period of 5, 10 or 15 years, you can ensure that your window frames get a new layer of paint every 5-8 years. This means the window frames will always look great and you will also be perfectly protected against moisture. Such a subscription service can save you approximately 20%.

Biggest savings: comparing offers

The best thing you can do to save money on a moving service is to compare different offers by different painters. Our website enables you to receive up to 6 price estimates from moving firms. In this way, you can compare the different offers and save up to 30%!
